On the Great Barrier Reef, the odds facing a newborn coral are almost impossibly long. Corals spawn only a few nights each year, releasing billions of tiny egg and sperm bundles into the dark water in a single synchronised event. The few that fertilise become coral larvae, and from there the gauntlet begins: currents scatter them, predators pick them off, and as few as one in a million will ever settle and grow into an adult colony.
Now a deceptively simple invention is tilting those odds back in the corals' favour. Researchers from CSIRO and Southern Cross University have been trialling the larval seedbox, a small clear container that works as both nursery and launch pad for the reef's youngest residents.
A gentler way to reseed a reef
During spawning, eggs and sperm are collected from healthy reefs and reared in floating pools until they develop into larvae. The hard part has always been the handover: how to deliver those fragile larvae onto a degraded reef without losing most of them to the current. The seedbox answers that. Fitted with fine mesh windows and small openings at its base, it is positioned by divers on the sea floor and releases its larvae gradually, over twelve to twenty-four hours, rather than all at once. That delay shelters the babies at their most vulnerable moment and gives them time to find a surface to call home.
Early results that turn heads
The first pilot, at Lizard Island in late 2024, recorded coral settlement rates up to 56 times higher than natural levels across thousands of square metres of reef. In November 2025 the team returned to tougher waters in the Whitsundays, deploying nineteen seedboxes at Hook Island, each holding an estimated 550,000 larvae. In some patches, coral settlement reached more than 100 times the usual level. The researchers will return later this year to see how those young corals have grown.
One tool among many
The seedbox will not, on its own, save the Great Barrier Reef. It cannot cool a warming ocean or halt the bleaching that warming brings. What it can do is make every spawning season count, adding a cheap, scalable tool to the Coral IVF toolkit developed under the Reef Restoration and Adaptation Program. Delivered through the Boats4Corals partnership of scientists, tourism operators and Traditional Owners, and backed by the Great Barrier Reef Foundation, it is a quiet piece of engineering with an outsized purpose: giving baby corals a fighting chance long enough for the rest of us to do our part.
